Imagine a birthing class that feels like you’re coming home to your own wisdom…

…where you’re facing your fears and overcoming them with the help of your sisters. Where you are diving into your own body to discover what it can teach you.

Imagine a birthing class that holds you…

…not only as you build your “birth plan” but also as you face the unknowns, the challenges and the amazing transformative possibilities of the birth you will actually have.

In this deeply immersive experience you will be in circle with up to nine other pregnant sisters, sharing, learning, shedding, preparing, grieving what we are leaving behind and embracing the possibilities of birth and motherhood. Some of our time together will include traditional teaching methods and materials. In these sessions you (and your partner, if you have one) will learn about the fundamentals of birth, tools for a calmer easier birth and ways that your birth partner can support you. The rest of the sessions will be for pregnant mummas only and will feel more like a sister-circle.

birthing fundamentals:

  • Feel prepared, know your options

  • Amazing tools for having a calmer, easier birth

  • Ways for your partner to support you now and on the day

  • how to communicate your preferences to your care providers

  • Learn to trust your body, yourself and the process

These are the things that all good birthing classes will teach you. But there’s more. This will be a safe space where we can also:

  • share our hopes and dreams for birth and motherhood

  • feel and release our own wounds around mothers and mothering

  • speak openly about our fears and release them

  • dive into the wisdom of our own bodies through movement and meditation

  • dance, play and prepare ourselves for the incredible initiation that is birth

Hi, I’m Laura, a birth doula and educator in New York. I created this immersion when I got pregnant myself…

…and realised that even though I had been working in the birthing world for many years, there wasn’t a single course I knew of that would give me everything I needed. As a birth doula since 2014, I knew very well what I needed to know. Yes, I needed to know about the stages of birth, about what my options were and how my partner could support me. Yes, there were classes that would offer me meditations to listen to and breathing techniques to practice.

But I wanted more.

I wanted a space I could bring my entire self. A space I could express my own excitements, anticipations, hopes and dreams. A space that would be able to safely hold me as I expressed fears, doubts and perhaps even the anger I feel about the way birth and mothering have been simultaneously idolized and marginalized, leaving me no room to be imperfect and tons of room to fail.

I wanted a place to laugh, to be silly, to cry, to fall in love with my ever-changing body, heart and mind. A place that wouldn’t judge me, that would allow me to feel how I’m feeling at every moment. I wanted a place that wasn’t afraid to talk about trauma and had practices for me to start to release it. A place I could witness my sisters doing the same.

And so I created the Moon Lodge Immersion for Birth Preparation.

When the birth doula gets pregnant: my bump at 20 weeks

What is a Moon Lodge and why is it relevant?

Back when humans were more connected to the earth and to natural cycles, the Moon Lodge was a physical place where women would gather together when they were on their “Moon”. Because the bleeding time was when we were considered to be closest to “spirit”, collective decisions would often start with the wisdom of the Moon Lodge before they reached more formal decision making bodies such as the village counsel.

And so we apply this idea to birth and motherhood… When women gather together with a respect for each other, for our bodies and for natural cycles, we begin to channel the wisdom of the world. In a safe space where we are free to be ourselves, we all have greater access to the clarity and answers we seek. The alchemy of the circle gives us the tools and the courage to follow our own intuition and to birth and mother the way we want to.

This is a 6 week journey…

The first three sessions will be 90 minutes long and will be only for those who are pregnant. Sessions 4 and 5 are each three hours long and include the more traditional “teaching” portion of the course - partners will be invited and encouraged to join us for these sessions. The final session will be a 90 minute closing circle for those of us who are pregnant.
